Dr Barbarann spengeman

Dr. Barbra Spengeman knew she was destined to become a physician after experiencing the death of her mother during high school where she earned the honor of valedictorian. She is a cum laude graduate of The University of Notre Dame with majors in preprofessional studies and psychology. She received her M.D. degree in 1988 from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her residency in Anesthesiology at The University of Florida in Gainesville in 1992. She was chosen to participate in their prestigious training curriculum with specific emphasis in pediatric and adult critical care medicine. She is board certified in Anesthesiology and recently earned her recertification from the American Board of Anesthesiologists in 2009.

Dr. Spengeman spent two years on staff at University Medical Center Shands Jacksonville as a clinical assistant professor. She was the quality assurance coordinator for the anesthesia department during that time and participated in the training of their residents.

In 1994, Dr. Spengeman joined the staff at Jacksonville Surgery Center and became fully committed to the practice and specialty of ambulatory anesthesia. She served as the medical director there for ten years. Dr. Spengeman has been the medical director at Center ONE Surgery Center since its inception and continues to be devoted to patient safety and quality of care delivered in an environment of comfort, convenience and heartfelt concern for all of her patients. She is the President of Excel Anesthesia Consultants and is proud to be in practice with Drs. Gloersen and Reiman who share this same passion for delivery of the highest quality in ambulatory anesthesia with specific attention geared toward regional anesthesia for postoperative pain relief.

Dr. Spengeman’s commitment and love for the practice of medicine was further reinforced having witnessed the strength of her late husband, James D. Popp, M.D. The dignity with which he lived his life and accepted his own death inspires her daily. She is blessed to be the mother of five wonderful children, an avid photographer, and a loyal fan of The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
