R. David Heekin, MD

Dr. R. David Heekin, MD, a Jacksonville native, graduated from Bishop Kenny High School and went on to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. After five years with the artillery, he attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland and went on to complete his internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. His next three years were spent providing orthopaedic care to the Army Rangers and All-Army wrestling team in Fort Benning, Georgia.  He then completed a fellowship in total joint replacement surgery at the prestigious Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute in Arlington, Virginia and returned to Walter Reed as the Chief of Total Joint Replacement Surgery.

Following retirement from the Army in 2000, Dr. Heekin returned home to Jackson where he established a very busy orthopaedic practice specializing in total joint replacement and sports medicine of the knees, hips and shoulders. A pioneer in the minimally invasive technique for total joint replacement surgery, Dr. Heekin currently performs more total joint replacements (all with the minimally invasive technique) than any orthopaedic surgeon in the area, and regularly lectures and provides hands-on teaching to other orthopaedic surgeons both nationally and internationally for this revolutionary new procedure.
